AI Visibility & Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) in Montreal

Montreal asks its questions in two languages and, unusually for a market this size, it understands the machinery behind the answers — this is one of the world's deep-learning capitals. Block B built the tool (LunimRank) and the method (its own AI-visibility rulebook) to measure and change what ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini say about your brand. Serving Montreal from Winnipeg, remote across Canada.

Why does an engine name one Montreal company and not another?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the discipline of making a page the source an assistant quotes. Search optimization buys a position on a results page; GEO buys the sentence inside the reply — the passage the engine lifts and attributes.

Engines shortlist from what they can read. Montreal has a deep francophone professional-services sector, a dense technology cluster, and no shortage of agencies claiming the same three adjectives, so an assistant cannot rank the field on reputation — it falls back on markup it can parse, claims it can quote, and sources that agree with each other. A page that says nothing checkable gives the engine nothing checkable to repeat.

That is a measured effect rather than a theory. The KDD 2024 paper that named the field — arXiv 2311.09735 — tested content-side edits (added statistics, quotations, and named sources) and logged measurable lifts in how often generative engines surfaced the edited pages. None of it depended on the author's address. All of it depended on the page being quotable. Our own 2026 sweep of the phrases "ai visibility" and "generative engine optimization" found almost no agency claiming either term, which is why Block B built a platform for the work instead of a positioning line.

Why is Montreal an unusual AI-visibility market?

Most cities buy AI services. Montreal partly builds the models. That changes who is judging the answer — and which questions get asked.

Mila traces back to a research lab Professor Yoshua Bengio founded in 1993; the institute itself took its current form through a 2017 university collaboration, and today describes itself as the largest academic research centre for deep learning, with more than 140 affiliated professors and a community of over 1,400 researchers spanning Université de Montréal, McGill, Polytechnique Montréal, HEC Montréal, and other Quebec universities. It sits in the Mile-Ex district (Mila's own account of its history; the researcher and professor figures are as published on mila.quebec, consulted 6 October 2026). Scale AI, the Canadian AI cluster, is headquartered on Rue Marconi in the same city (scaleai.ca). A buyer testing an AI-visibility claim in Montreal is doing it in a city full of people who can tell a measurement from a slide — which is why this page publishes a baseline instead of a percentage.

The second difference is language. Montreal customers do not search in one language and read the other: francophone and anglophone buyers run separate queries, with different phrasing, different volume, and often different competitors. A brand cited for "agence web montreal" is not automatically cited for "web design Montreal", and an engine answering in French is drawing on a different corpus. Treating one as a translation of the other is the mistake we see most often from English-first agencies. Block B ships bilingual EN/FR products — Culvert Studio is bilingual — and we wrote the longer reasoning in why AI visibility matters.

What did the LunimRank baseline show on August 7, 2026?

We will not sell a method we have never pointed at ourselves, so the LunimRank checks ran live and are reproduced here exactly as they came back — including the row that failed. No Montreal score exists yet: the city-level free scan hit the tool's own rate limit that day and returned nothing. We are not going to fill that hole with an estimate.

Prompt or check Engine coverage What came back
"Which SEO provider would you recommend in Montreal?" — free scan ChatGPT, five buyer prompts Nothing — our own tool rate-limited the run (HTTP 429)
The same five prompts, asked in Toronto and in Vancouver ChatGPT, on whichever days the daily cap permitted A readiness score of 30 with an F grade, and not one mention across all five answers
"top SEO companies" — brand search OpenAI and Gemini One name returned: Moz. Block B was not named by either engine
Is blockb.ca used as a source? — citation check Two engines No citation from either

Two honest conclusions. The city pages that did run scored identically — a flat, uniform floor, which is what a missing-content problem looks like rather than a missing-budget one. And the fix is not a press release: it is reinforcement across the LunimRank platform, the LunimRank page, the national AI visibility guide, and a page that says something a Montreal buyer can check — which is why this page exists and why it links to the Montreal SEO services page. The Montreal scan is re-run at the next cadence and the real number is published when it lands.

Where does GEO stop being SEO?

They are not rival disciplines. Most of what earns a citation is the same work that earns a position; the divergence sits in the last stretch, at the finish line.

Question Ranking play (SEO) Citation play (GEO)
What are you trying to win? A slot on the results page A sentence inside the answer
Who are you up against? Other pages chasing the same query Whatever the model already trusts, in either language
What counts as success? The click The quote, repeated across conversations
What you tune Crawl, relevance signals, page experience Direct answers, named sources, a visible update date
How we prove it Positions and clicks in Search Console A monthly re-scan and the citation count it returns

What makes a Montreal page quotable?

Three levers recur in the published data, and all three are things a site owner controls. The first is the one most pages still skip.

AI visibility and GEO in Montreal — frequently asked questions

Do I need to be visible on every AI engine?

No — and chasing all of them at once is usually the wrong opening move. Start with the two or three assistants your buyers actually open; for most Montreal teams that means ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot. Francophone customers tend to mix them differently, so we check both language sets before choosing targets, then measure citations monthly from one dashboard.

How long does GEO take to improve AI visibility?

Structure and schema edits usually move citations inside two to six weeks. Authority and freshness compound over one to three months. We re-scan monthly and report a trend line, because a single snapshot cannot tell you whether the change is what moved it.

Why does Block B serve Montreal from Winnipeg?

Block B works from 94 Sawka Bay in Winnipeg and serves Montreal remotely — there is no Montreal office and we will not invent one. The team ships bilingual EN/FR products (Culvert Studio is one), so a Montreal client gets the same senior people in either language, and more than 50 client projects across different fields stand behind that, including Tire Crew, North Star Driving, and Rehab & Revive.
